Hello, I am Yoshi from NILS Japanese language school. What do you have for lunch in your country? Today, I want to talk about one of the most popular menu for lunch, うどん/そば Udon/Soba.
Udon and soba are to major kinds of noodles which have long been loved by Japanese people. Udon are made from wheat flour while soba noodles are a mixture of buckwheat and wheat flour. Generally, udon are thicker, and are whitish in color. Soba are brownish and much thinner than udon. Both types of noodles are eaten either hot or cold with soy-sauce-based broth. Various condiments such as chopped green onions, adn sesame seeds are usually provided on the side. Some people like to sprinkle seven-seasoned spice mix on top. Udon and soba are also cooked with meat and vegetables. Non-Japanese people might be surprised at the slurping sounds that accompany the eating of noodles, but one should understand that it is not bad manners in Japan.
