生け花

Hello, I am Yoshi from NILS Japanese language school. As you read in the previous school news, some of our students enjoyed flowoer arrangement. I would like to talk a little bit about it.
Traditional Japanese flower arrangement, called 生け花 ikebana, originated in Buddhist temples, where monks arranged flowers to offer them to statues of the Buddha in the 6th century. Ikebana literally means to give flowers life, so flowers should be arranged as if they are still living harmoniously in the nature. The styles of ikebana we see today were perfeted in the Muromachi period. There are more than 2,000 ikebana schools today, but their basic concepts of arranging flowers are very similar. Three groups of stems and flowers sympolizing heaven, the earth and people are arranged to represent the universe.
