Kingyo 金魚

Hello, I am Yoshi from NILS Japanese language school.
Goldfish are aquarium fish belonging to the carp family. They were introduced from China to Japan during the 16th century. Breeders have since produced a variety of different kinds, such a veil tail goldfish, telescope goldfish and so on. Today in Japan, there are more than 20 kinds. The most common ones are Wakin 和金, Ryukin 琉金, Demekin 出目金 and Ranchu 蘭鋳. At home, they are commonly raised in goldfish bowls, aquariums or ponds in the garden. “Goldfish scooping” is one of the most popular traditional games at summer festivals an street fairs. Lots of summer festivals are held all over Japan in summer, so you wil see and try goldfish catching here in Japan.
