Let’s learn Japanese language: Lesson 15-(2)

Hello, I am Yoshi from NILS Japanese language school. Let’s learn more expressions using the V て-form!
[V て-form は いけません] You must not do…
This sentence pattern is used to express prohibition.
(Example)
ここで たばこを 吸(す)っては いけません。
You must not smoke here.

When you strongly wish to refuse permission to questions using the expression V て-form も いいですか, you answer いいえ、いけません, omitting V て-form は. This expression cannot be used by an inferior to a superior.
(Example)
ここで 遊(あそ)んでも いいですか。 May I play here?
—いいえ、いけません。 No, you must not.

[V て-form います]
In addition to the usage of V て-form います you learned in Lesson 14, it is also used in describing a certain continuing state which resulted from a certain action in the past.
(Example)
わたしは 結婚(けっこん)して います。 I’m married.
わたしは 田中さんを しって います。 I know Mr. Tanaka.
わたしは 東京に 住んで います。 I live in Tokyo.
わたしは カメラを 持って います。 I have a camera.
Note that もって います means “be holding” and “possess” as well.
