Hello, I am Yoshi from NILS Japanese language school. It is getting cold here in Fukuoka. There are some heating appareatus, but we introduce Kotatsu こたつ today.
The kotatsu is a kind of heater to warm hte lower body, mainly the legs and feet. It is made up of a low table with a quilted coverlet. A tabel top is usually put over the top. In the old days, charcoal was used as a heat source, but moern style kotatsu have an electric heater attached to the underside of the table. During the winter, people get together, stretch their legs under a kotatsu and have a good time. For example, we enjoy talking together, having melas, or watching TV under a kotatsu.
