宝くじ

Hello, I am Yoshi from NILS Japanese language school. Today’s topic is Takarakuji 宝くじ or Lotteries. The selling of lottery tickets is state-controlled in Japan. The lottery business started in 1946 as a way of raising money for local governments. There are three main types of lotteries; given-number lottery, self-selected-number lottery and scratch cards. One lottery ticket costs 100-300 yen. They are available at lottery booths in stores, banks and train stations. The highest prizes are 400 million yen! Particularly the lottery called “Summer-Jumbo Lottery サマージャンボ宝くじ” and “Year-End Jumbo Lottery 年末ジャンボ宝くじ” have big prizes and are always popular.
