Hello, I am Yoshi from NILS Japanese language school. Mt. Fuji (富士山) was registered a new World Heritage site in June this year. Many people has visited Mt. Fuji since then, and approximately 80,000 people climbed Mt. Fuji only in July.
Mt. Fuji is a composite volcano, located at the border between Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures. The latest eruption was in 1707. The height above sea level is 3,776 meters making it the highest mountain in Japan. Mt. Fuji is one of three sacred mountains in Japan. Its snow-capped peak has been the object of religious worship and pilgrimages. Especially during the Edo period (1603-1867), people tried climbing Mt. Fuji to express their faith. In addition, the symmetrical cone shape of Mr. Fuji has fascinated many famous artists sice ancient times. A lot of painings and poems have taken it up as a theme. The name of Mt. Fuji is widely known abroad as a symbol of traditional Japanese beauty.
