Hello, I am Yoshi from NILS Japanese language school. Today, I want to introduce a traditional instrument for calculation. It is called “Soroban そろばん.” Soroban consists of a rectangular frame and beads on wires thatn represent one and five. Soroban was introduced from China in the 13th century. You can add, subtract, muliply and do division with soroban. There are many private soroban schools throughout Japan since students can become skillful at mental arithmetic through using soroban. Soroban tournaments and certificate examinations are held every year to recognize and encourage those who work hard practicing soroban.
