Tsukimi-月見-

Hello, I am Yoshi from NILS Japanese language school. Today’s topic is Tsukimi (月見) or moon viewing.
Moon viewing events are held to admire the full moon. They usually take place on the night of August 15th by the lunar calendar (around the September 20th on the solar calendar). It is September 19 this year. The moon has, since ancient times, been one of the major themes in traditional Japanese poetry. Also, moon viewing used to be a kind of festive ritual for upland farming especially of aroid potatoes. On this night, we customarily offer rice dumplings, autumn fruit and crops and pampas grasses to the moon. These are placed either on the engawa veranda or by the window so that the moon is abel to recognize them.
