Doll’s Festival is one of the traditional Japanese events. Families with girls celebrate March 3 as a day to wish for their growth and happiness. This family event originally began in the Edo era and is referred to as the Doll’s Festival because families of girls display a set of dols representing the emperor, empress, their servants, miniature furniture, and so forth, on a five aor seven-tiered stand. Ancient people transferred their sins onto the dolls and threw them in rivers.
We cannot display such a large set of dolls shown above, so NILS teachers made a small dolls with origami, and display it at the entrance of the school. Our students also learn a song of Doll’s Festival at school.
In our Spring Program, we offer you a field trip to Yanagawa where a large scale doll’s festival called Sagemon Meguri is held. You can enjoy watching various kinds of beautiful dolls there until early April.
