Winter Course School Activity: Calligraphy #2

We would like to introduce another interview of Megan-san from the United States about our school activity, “calligraphy.”

1. Would you tell us which country you are from and tell us a bit about your country?
—I am from America. In America, we don’t haev calligraphy really. Everything you need to write is usually on the computer, so you don’t learn how to write beautifully in school. I think that it is very interesting that children in Japan learn such a beautiful art form from very young.

2. You started 8 weeks short term program and I believe it is your first experience for calligraphy. How did you like it?
—I love it! It was very hard at first, but I think with practice I could get much better. Even my bad drawings were still beautiful because of ink.

3. Would you show us your work?
—Yes. I was afraid it wouldn’t turn out well, but I’m proud of it.

4. You didn’t choose a word, did you?
—Instead of a word, I was inspiered by a place for prayer in Fukuoka, Tenjin, when I took the train into town yesterday. It has beautiful buildings and a huge gateway. That’s what I drew. I then added mountains that I see all around Fukuoka.

5. How did this experience make you feel more interesting to learn Japanese language?
—Yes! It helped to show how beautiful the Japanese writing system is. now I am intersted in learning kanji!

6. Do you want to try it again?
—Yes! I’d like to get better learn more kanji to draw.
