We had Tanabata Festival at NILS. Our students learned traditional Japanese culture during this activities.
First, they had experience to do calligraphy, writing with brush. It was, of course, their first time to write with brush, I believe. They first learned how to hold a brush. It is different from holding a pen or a pencil, so it must have been difficult for them. But some minutes later, they were getting used to writing with brush, and they wrote their favorite word(s) on paperboard.
Next, students enjoyed their fist experience of tea ceremony. They learned some specific manners on tea ceremony. It is quite hard for them to understand it, but they tried very hard to follow those manners. How was the taste? Many of them said, “Bitter!” It tastes bitter even to Japanese people, so it was bitter for them, of course.
Some of the students wore yukata, traditional Japanese summer wear. You can get yukata at many stores in Japan. It is not that expensive. It is 7,000-20,000 yen, so it must be a good souvenir for your family and friends, and of course, for yourself. You feel very cool in yukata even in hot and humid summer in Japan!
Many of our students enjoy such cultural activities as well as learning Japanese language.
