In Japan, the youth over 20 years old are regarded as adults and gain all the rights of citizenship such as the right of vote. We celebrate youngsters on the second Monday of January who reach the age of twenty between April 2 of the previous year and April 1 of the new year. It is also legal to drink and smoke from this age. Local cities and communities host official celebrations called the Coming-of-Age-ceremony and hold parties throughout Japan. It is traditional for women to wear gorgeous kimonos with long sleeves called furisode on this day.
