Why Do We Eat These New Year’s Food?

Happy New Year!! Akemashite Omedeto Gozaimasu.

Today, I would like to talk about the type of food we eat in Japan in New Year’s holiday and reasons behind them. The most common set of New Year’s food is called osechi. These are some of  osechi dishes.

-Prawn

When you grill or boil prawns, their backs bend like elderly people. The shape symbolizes longevity.

-Fish paste(kamaboko)

What do you think it looks like? It represents the first sunrise of the new year.

-Sweet rolled omelet

Have you ever seen a scroll in a historical Japanese TV show like the one a Ninja holds in the mouth? This omelet looks like a scroll, an old Japanese book, which symbolizes knowledge.

-Herring roe

This is a photo of herring eggs. As you can see, there are a huge number of small eggs symbolizing fertility.

-Red and White Salad

This salad is made with carrots and radishes. This color combination of red and white is supposed to be celebratory. In addition, these root vegetables express one’s desire to have deep rooted (stable) family business.

Now that you know the reasons behind some of the special New Year’s food in Japan, you can show off your knowledge!
