Disaster Preparedness Learning at NILS Ogori Campus
On January 27, disaster preparedness learning was conducted at our school. All students at NILS participated and learned together about how to respond during disasters and the importance of daily preparedness.
Objectives of Disaster Preparedness Learning
The objectives of this session were:
- To be able to act calmly in the event of a real disaster.
- To understand that protecting one’s own life is the most important thing.
We reviewed how to read evacuation instruction posters and how to locate nearby shelters with the help of our teachers.
Contents of the Disaster Preparedness Learning
- Actions During an Earthquake
We practiced fundamental evacuation behaviors such as taking cover under desks, being aware of falling objects, and staying still until the shaking subsides. - Evacuation Drill
The drill was conducted under the scenario that an emergency earthquake alert sounded during class, followed by strong shaking. After the shaking subsided, we simulated a fire breaking out in a nearby house, and students practiced evacuating while confirming safe evacuation routes. By carefully listening to the teachers’ instructions, we learned the importance of acting calmly.
Important Points During Evacuation
When evacuating outdoors in a group, the following points are especially important:
- Do not push – Stay calm and avoid pushing those around you.
- Do not run – Move calmly to prevent injuries.
- Do not talk unnecessarily – Stay quiet to hear important instructions.
- Do not go back – Once evacuated, do not return until safety is confirmed.
These rules were created based on lessons learned from past disasters in Japan.
In fact, during the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, a tragic event occurred where some people, remembering forgotten belongings, returned home during evacuation and were swept away by the tsunami.
Final Thoughts
In Japan, due to past tragic experiences and the increasing risk of large earthquakes, the entire country is becoming more conscious of disaster preparedness. Through this learning session, I strongly felt that disasters can occur anytime, anywhere, and that daily preparation is crucial. Furthermore, protecting one’s own life requires accurate knowledge and calm action.
This learning opportunity made me reconsider not only preparedness at school but also how to be ready in case a disaster occurs while at home. How about reviewing your own evacuation plans and actions in case of a disaster?
I hope that in the next disaster preparedness session, we can learn even more and put our knowledge into practice effectively.
