Education in Japan 2: Juku [塾]

Hello, I am Yoshi from NILS Japanese language school. Today’s topic is the education in Japan.

Juku refers to private tutoring schools. Students take lessons after regular school hours, on weekends, and during long holidays. There are two major roles in the education at jukus. One is to provide supplementary lessons for at-risk students who fall behind others in the school classroom. Another is to offer special courses for students preparing for entrance exams to junior high schools, high schools or universities. There are also various non-academic jukus for teaching such subjects as calligraphy, abacus, music and art.

NILS group school, Chikushi-Shugakukan (Chikushu) is juku in Fukuoka. It has 12 schools in Fukuoka Prefecture. One of our students, Trevor-san from Canada, teaches English to the 5th and 6th graders studying at Chikushu. We will soon update his story about teaching English there.
