Phrases in Japanese: おはようございます

Hello, I am Yoshi from NILS Japanese language school. Today’s phrase in Japanese is Ohayo gozaimasu おはようございます, “Good morning.”
Ohayo gozaimasu おはようございます is a greeting exchanged between persons (whether or not they are members of the same family) when they meet in the morning. It may be shortened to Ohayo おはよう in addressing a close friend, or a person lower in status. The original meaning of Ohayo gozaimasu was “It is early” (with a connotation of respect and pliteness); this greeting is therefore most appropriate in the early morning. At 11:00 a.m., for example, one is more likely to say Konnichi wa こんにちは “Good day!”
Unlike “Good morning!”, which, on formal occasions, may be used as a farewell in the morning, Ohayo gozaimsu can never be used in parting.
